As an automotive photographer, few things excite me more than the opportunity to capture a truly extraordinary car. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing the Ferrari 812 Superfast, a masterpiece of Italian engineering and design. With its striking curves, roaring V12 engine, and unparalleled presence, the 812 Superfast is not just a car; it’s a work of art. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how the shoot unfolded.
Choosing the Perfect Location
When photographing a car as iconic as the Ferrari 812 Superfast, the setting must complement its elegance and power. For this shoot, I selected two distinct locations:
Urban Elegance: A sleek, modern parking garage with clean lines and reflective surfaces provided a contemporary backdrop to highlight the car’s aggressive styling.
Scenic Freedom: A winding coastal road at sunrise offered the perfect opportunity to capture the Ferrari’s spirit of speed and adventure. The golden hues of the morning light accentuated its Rosso Corsa paint job, making the car pop against the natural scenery.
Capturing the Details
The 812 Superfast’s design is a symphony of aerodynamic brilliance and aesthetic perfection. I focused on the following details to do it justice:
Front Fascia: The menacing grille and sharp headlights exude power. A low-angle shot emphasized its road dominance.
Side Profile: The sweeping lines and elongated hood are quintessential Ferrari. Using a wide lens, I captured the car’s silhouette with the sun flaring through the background.
Rear End: The quad taillights and diffuser are pure aggression. A three-quarter rear shot, combined with dramatic lighting, highlighted these elements.
Interior: The cockpit of the 812 Superfast is a driver’s dream. I focused on the steering wheel with its signature Manettino dial, the luxurious leather seats, and the intricate stitching.
Playing with Lighting
Lighting is everything in photography, especially when dealing with reflective surfaces like a Ferrari’s glossy paintwork. During the golden hour, the soft, warm light added a natural glow to the car’s curves. For the urban shots, I used LED panels and diffused lighting to create a moody, high-contrast look.
One trick I employed was using polarizing filters to minimize reflections and ensure the car’s color and design remained the focus. This was especially useful for close-ups of the hood and side panels.
Action Shots
A Ferrari isn’t meant to stand still, so capturing its motion was essential. I mounted a camera rig to achieve rolling shots, with the coastal road providing a dynamic backdrop. A low shutter speed added a sense of speed and excitement, blurring the road and wheels while keeping the car crisp and in focus.
Post-Processing
Editing these images was about enhancing, not overhauling. I used software to:
Enhance the vibrancy of the Rosso Corsa paint.
Add contrast and clarity to emphasize details.
Subtly darken the background to make the car stand out.
Final Thoughts
Photographing the Ferrari 812 Superfast was an unforgettable experience. This car isn’t just a vehicle; it’s a statement of passion and performance. Capturing its essence required careful planning, creative angles, and an appreciation for its artistry. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or a fellow photographer, I hope this glimpse into the process inspires you to see automotive photography as more than just capturing images—it’s about telling a story.
